These 'shan zai chang' as they are called in China, or 'mountain-bandit factories' churn out pills without previous experience or an understanding of the herbs they package. In essence, they manufacture counterfeit goods of questionable quality and safety, capitalising on the good reputation of Chinese herbal medicine.

These factories sometimes skip processing altogether or use the wrong species of herb - an error which can prove toxic. The formulas produced by these factories can also contain bacteria, heavy metals, and drugs, as testing has shown."
