General Information
Grindelia is a perennial herb can grow up to 3 foot high. It has triangular leaves and yellow-orange daisy-type flowers. This plant was used by Native Americans to treat bronchial problems and skin conditions such as poison ivy. Grindelia was recognized in the Pharmacopoeia of the United States from 1882 to 1926. This herb has antispasmodic and expectorant properties.
Medicinal Use
Today Grindelia is used for bronchial asthma and conditions where there is congestion in the airways. It helps relax the muscles of the smaller bronchial passages and clears mucous. It is also thought that Grindelia desensitizes the nerve endings in the bronchial tubes and slows the heart rate, making it easier to breathe. This herb is used as a treatment for bronchitis, emphysema, whooping cough, hay fever, and cystitis. Externally, it is used to help speed the healing of skin irritation and burns.

To use an infusion, take 1 teaspoonful of the dried herb in 1 cup of boiling water and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink 3 times a day. In treating asthmatic conditions, Grindelia works very well in conjunction with lobelia and pill-bearing spurge.

Grindelia is generally regarded as safe when taken in the recommended doses. If you are taking any medications (prescription or over-the-counter), it is best to seek the advice of your doctor before using this herb for the treatment of your condition. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
